Joseph Arthur "Joe" Ridgway (born April 25, 1873 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy , † 1930 ) was an English football player . The goalkeeper made 14 appearances for Newton Heath in the Football League Second Division in the 1890s .

Career

Ridgway played for West Manchester in the Lancashire League before joining the Football League Second Division at Newton Heath from the eponymous district of Manchester in July 1895 . As a substitute keeper behind Billy Douglas , Ridgway played six missions in the season 1895/96 and showed solid performances. Bad luck with injuries limited his already short playing time in the following years. In February 1896, he broke his finger in the FA Cup replay in a 5-1 loss to Derby County in a shot by Steve Bloomer . Barely seven months later, Ridgway, who occasionally let himself be carried away on adventurous excursions outside his own goal, acted as the goalkeeper of the "Heathens" at the beginning of the 1896/97 season, but was seriously injured on Matchday 5 against Grimsby Town . The club officials then signed the Scottish national goalkeeper Frank Barrett from Dundee FC , who was the club's regular goalkeeper for the next four years. Ridgway came only in the season 1897/98 to another three missions before he left Manchester in December 1901 and moved to Rochdale Town.
