Joe Sentieri (actually Rino Luigi Sentieri ; born March 3, 1925 in Genoa , † March 27, 2007 in Pescara ) was an Italian singer and actor .

biography

Sentieri had his first success in 1959 at the Canzonissima music competition with his interpretation of the song Piove (Ciao, ciao bambina) , with which Domenico Modugno had a number one hit that same year. With Ritroviamoci and Milioni di scintille he achieved great sales successes in 1959. In 1960 he took third place at the Sanremo Festival with Quando vien la sera . In the Italian charts, the song rose to number 2. Another top 10 success came with the song È mezzanotte , which came to number 8.

His internationally best known song is Uno dei tanti . The work composed by Carlo Donida and Mogol was published in 1961. In 1963 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote an English text about it. Under the title I (Who Have Nothing) the song became a worldwide hit and more than 30 times gecovert , including from Tom Jones , Gladys Knight , Manfred Mann's Earth Band , Ben E. King , Sylvester , Luther Vandross and Shirley Bassey .

In the 1960s and 1970s Sentieri appeared in a number of motion pictures, including Urlatori alla sbarra (1960) with Adriano Celentano and Mina (directed by Lucio Fulci ) and Law and Passion (1970) with Ornella Muti (directed by Damiano Damiani ).

On March 27, 2007, at the age of 82, he died of a cerebral haemorrhage in the Santo Spirito Hospital in Pescara.
