Joe South
Joe South (born February 28, 1940 as Joseph Alfred Souter in Atlanta , Georgia , † September 5, 2012 in Buford , Georgia) was an American singer and songwriter who won several Grammys .
Life
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, South had several hits in the US and Europe. The single Games People Play reached the top 10 in the USA in 1968 and won two Grammys in the categories Best Contemporary Song and Song of the Year . In Germany, the song reached number 11 in the singles charts.
The greatest commercial success he had in 1971 with the song (I Never Promised You A) written for Lynn Anderson Rose Garden . Anderson won a Grammy for singing, South for his songwriting capacity. Other songs composed for Anderson also made it into the top 10 of the Billboard charts .
South also acted as a sideman for Aretha Franklin , Tommy Roe and Bob Dylan . For Simon & Garfunkel he played electric guitar in the song The Sounds of Silence . In 1979 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame . South's songs have been covered many times by other musicians. Deep Purple , Billy Joe Royal (also with Down in the Boondocks ), Gotthard and Kula Shaker had success with their versions of Hush . Elvis Presley played the song Walk a Mile in My Shoes.
According to his record company, Joe South died of heart failure on September 5, 2012.
