JC Kempe

Johan Christoffer Carl Kempe , called JC , (born November 19, 1799 in Stralsund ; † October 17, 1872 on the Ångermanland between Härnösand and Stockholm ) was a Swedish-German businessman and industrialist who founded Mo och Domsjö AB (predecessor of today's Holmen Group) applies.

Kempe was born in 1799 as the son of a merchant and shipowner in Swedish Pomerania . During the Napoleonic Wars , the father lost a large part of his fortune and sent thirteen-year-old JC to his uncle in Stockholm , where he was to be trained as a businessman. After seven years with his uncle, with whom JC kept getting into arguments, he decided to return to Pomerania . Olof Johan Wikner, one of Kempe's colleagues in his uncle's office, offered him a job as an accountant with his father Johan Wikner in Härnösand . He was a trader, shipowner and sawmill operator.

When Johan Wikner died in 1823, married his daughter Carin Kempe and had thus together with his brother Olof, the company Johan Wikner & Comp., Which among other things the sawmill in Mo belonged. In 1836, Olof Wikner sold his shares in the company to Kempe, who invested in shipbuilding and at times owned one of the largest Swedish merchant ships (the Hindoo ). Kempe expanded the sawmill only a little at first, but he bought land at the mouth of the Moälven in Domsjö to load the rafted wood onto ships. In 1853 the sawmill burned down and was replaced by a modern one with greater effect. With the higher income, Kempe bought more land and expanded the rafting routes. At the age of 59 he handed over parts of the company to his sons Wilhelm and Bernhard, but kept the facilities in Mo and Domsjö, as well as an office in Stockholm . In 1864/1865 a steam saw was built in Domsjö, the cornerstone for the Domsjö factories . On the way back from an inspection of the sawmill in Mo, Kempe died on October 17, 1872 on the steamer Ångermanland on the Baltic Sea between Härnösand and Stockholm.
