Johann Bertram von Rappard (baptism entry: Rappardus) (* July 24, 1708 in Kleve ; † March 21, 1774 in Kleve) was a Prussian war and domain councilor and entrepreneur in the salt industry.

origin

His parents were Heinrich Wilhelm Rappard (1681–1747) and his wife Maria Susanna ter Schmitten (ter Smitten) (approx. 1688–1741). The father was raised to the nobility by the Prussian king in 1737. In the tribute to the merits of the family members, the family of Johann Bertram von Rappard is mentioned and the coat of arms is described. His brother Conrad Gerhard (1715–1779) was War Domain Councilor in Minden , his uncle Friedrich Wilhelm (1699–1758) was Rendant in Kleve. The family was an Evangelical Reformed denomination .

Career

He enrolled on May 8, 1726 to study in Marburg and on February 21, 1729 for jurisprudence in Halle . In 1734 he was appointed war and domain council in Kleve. He married in 1736 and in 1749, together with his brother in Minden, made various proposals for improving the inland salt pans . He died at the age of 65.

Salt works in Unna

In 1750 he leased the Königsborn saltworks in Unna with the Brandenburg baron Friedrich Ludolph von Torck von Nordherringen (1709 - approx. 1787) as the department head for the salt sector at the Klevian War and Domain Chamber . They invested almost 20,000 talers to bring the plant up to date with the latest technology. They increased production considerably, so that even salt could still be exported. The use of coal and hydropower played a major role. Time and again, a lack of coal led to the interruption of salt production. Towards the end of the 18th century, the Königsborn saltworks ranked third among all salt works in the Kingdom of Prussia in terms of production and value added. The two entrepreneurs from Unna wanted to build a salt works in the area of today's Bad Oeynhausen around 1750 .

In 1751, the Prussian King Frederick the Great entrusted them (and not Valentin von Massow , the Prussian Chamber President in Minden ) with the construction of the salt works and the establishment of the salt works in Mellbergen / Rehme near Minden. However, this led to major conflicts until Rappard finally resigned from this task in 1766.
