Johann Christian Fick (born October 12, 1763 in Sattelgrund ( Tettau ), † June 26, 1821 in Erlangen ) was a German historian , geographer, and English specialist . He is considered to be the inventor of the Franconian Switzerland landscape designation . This name appeared for the first time in 1807 in Fuck's travel report My latest trip to water and land or a fragment from the history of my life , and in 1812 in Fuck's city and university guide historical-topographical-statistical description of Erlangen and its area with instructions and rules for students .

Fick attended high school in Coburg . He then studied theology and medicine in Erlangen and Jena until 1784 . He traveled to England , among other places , where he learned the English language as an autodidact . From 1790 to 1797 Fick was a collaborator at the grammar school, then lecturer for English and professor at Erlangen University . He was best known for the successful textbook Practical English language teaching for Germans beyderley sex from 1793. He also wrote several treatises on scientific and political topics and translated writings from English. He was the author of the authoritative translation of the influential treatises on the history and antiquities, the arts, sciences and literature of Asia by the British researcher Sir William Jones .
