Johann Emanuel Veith (born July 10, 1787 in Kuttenplan , Egerland , † November 6, 1876 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor, clergyman and author of numerous religious and medical, but also poetic works.

Life

Veith was born the son of a rabbi. After high school and studying medicine and veterinary medicine in Prague , he started teaching at the kuk Thierarzney Institute in Vienna , which he - now a professor - was director of for five years.

In Vienna he met leading figures of the Viennese Catholic renewal, including Klemens Maria Hofbauer , as whose doctor he worked. Baptized in 1816, he studied Catholic theology from 1817 and entered the Redemptorist Order , which he left again years later (1830). As a priest he also remained active as a doctor. So he was a keen advocate of homeopathy during a cholera epidemic . He found recognition primarily as a preacher , from 1831 to 1845 he was cathedral preacher at St. Stephen's in Vienna. He also received the Grand Gold Salvator Medal and the Commander's Cross Franz Joseph Order and in 1846 became Dome of Honor of Salzburg.

Veith was a co-founder of the Austrian "Catholic Association" in 1848 and a member of the Christian social movement in Vienna at the beginning of the 19th century.

In addition to his extensive work as an author, he was the editor of numerous religious magazines and paperbacks (e.g. "Lydia", Philosophical Yearbook, 5 volumes from 1849–1854, together with his long-time friend Anton Günther ).

In 1877 the Veithgasse in Vienna- Landstrasse (3rd district) was named after him.
