Life

Johann Friedrich Doles was the son of the cantor Johann Andreas Doles and attended school in Schmalkalden between 1727 and 1733 and later the Hennebergisches Gymnasium in Schleusingen . There he founded a “weekly concert” with classmates, for which he also wrote compositions . From 1739 to 1744 he studied theology in Leipzig and at the same time took lessons from Johann Sebastian Bach .

In 1744 he became cantor in Freiberg . From 1756 until his retirement in 1789 he was cantor of the Thomas School and music director of the two main churches in Leipzig, and since 1770 also university music director .

Dole's compositions are easy to understand and catchy in diction and were very popular in his day. They reveal little of the influence of his teacher Bach. He wrote 158 cantatas , 35 motets and several passions . A collection of chorale preludes, a four-part chorale book, the cantata for the foundation of the "Great Concert" (from which the Gewandhaus Orchestra emerged ) "The Praise of Music" and his setting of 21 odes by his friend Christian Fürchtegott Gellert were published .

Johann Friedrich Doles died on February 8, 1797 in Leipzig.

Doles' son Johann Friedrich was a lawyer and notary. He also composed.
