Johann Gabriel Seidl (born June 21, 1804 in Vienna ; † July 18, 1875 there ) was an Austrian archaeologist , poet , storyteller and playwright . He was the librettist of the Austrian imperial anthem of 1854 "get God, God defend our Emperor, our country!" . He published some works under the pseudonym Emil Ledie.

Life

Johann Gabriel Seidl was the son of a lawyer and attended the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna. He then studied law . In 1829 he finally became a high school professor in Cilli, Lower Styria . From 1840 Johann Gabriel Seidl was custodian at the coin and antiquity cabinet in Vienna. From 1856 to 1871 he was responsible for the treasury .

In addition to his scientific studies, Johann Gabriel Seidl published numerous poems and stories, including the first poems by Nikolaus Lenau . Many of his poems were set to music by Franz Schubert (e.g. Die Taubenpost ) and Carl Loewe (e.g. Die Uhr ). In addition to high German poems, Johann Gabriel Seidl also wrote numerous verses in Lower Austrian dialect. In the years 1828 to 1838 the four booklets of short and longer dialect poems "Flinserln" were published. “This is what the Austrian calls the type of light metal jewelry that the High German usually calls tinsel. No matter how worthless this ornament may be in itself, it does not stand unclean and, as a simple embroidery, has its painful effect. The application of this expression to a collection of undemanding trifles probably doesn't need any further discussion. "

Seidl's hiking saying became famous:

You want to heal from wounds,
Fresh out of a dull house!
All sorrow as you felt
Nature heals you lovingly.
Whether the first larks are floating
Whether the snow covers the ground
Get out quickly! There is life
Your head will be healthy.

He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 0, row 1, number 10). In 1876, Seidlgasse in Vienna- Landstrasse (3rd district) was named after him.
