Johann Georg Gsteu

Johann Georg Gsteu (born July 26, 1927 in Hall in Tirol ; † August 20, 2013 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

After graduating from a sculpture school in Salzburg, Gsteu began to study architecture with Friedrich Achleitner , Wilhelm Holzbauer and Friedrich Kurrent in 1950 with Clemens Holzmeister at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . After graduating from 1953, he formed an office community with Friedrich Achleitner. The Oberbaumgartner parish church in Vienna , which was built between 1963 and 1965, is considered to be the main work of Gsteus during this period .

From 1980 to 1992 he taught as a professor at the University of Kassel . From 2000 to 2005 he was visiting professor in Innsbruck.

A striking design element of his later years are trapezoidal sheets made of aluminum, which can be seen, for example, at the Vienna underground stations on the U6 line in the south of the federal capital, from the Tscherttegasse station to Siebenhirten .

On August 20, 2013 Gsteu died at the age of 86 in the Hanusch Hospital in Vienna-Penzing .
