Johann Georg Siegesbeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Georg Siegesbeck (* 1686 in Merseburg , † 1755 in Saint Petersburg ) was a German doctor and botanist . From 1735 he was a demonstrator of the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg and professor of botany at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Siegesb. "

Live and act

Siegesbeck was a systematist and outspoken opponent of the Linneischen system, which classifies the plant world on the basis of the reproductive organs . Siegesbeck argued less on the basis of scientific findings and more with virtue and fear of God, which for the social conditions of the time were both politically correct and irrevocable. Excerpt from Botanosophiae : “[...] Who would like to believe that God established such abhorrent fornication in the kingdom of plants? Who could expose such an unchaste system to the academic youth without causing offense? "

The enmity between Siegesbeck and Linné was deep and expressed itself in many ways. So even today an insignificant weed classified by Linné is known as Sigesbeckia serrata ( Siegesbeckie ). Siegesbeck, on the other hand, took advantage of his position in Saint Petersburg to block the delivery of Russian and Siberian plants to the research community around Linnaeus.

Siegesbeck's 15 volume herbarium with copies almost 300 years old is kept in the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel .

Honor taxon

Carl von Linné named the genus Sigesbeckia of the sunflower plant family (Asteraceae) after him .
