Life
Wing was originally a commercial assistant, but emigrated to the United States in 1810 , where he studied the English language and traveled extensively. In 1819 he returned to Germany. He gave up this position to take over the consulate for the United States in Leipzig. Since 1848, the US government gave him the business of the Smithsonian Institution for Germany, Russia, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. Thereby he exerted a great influence on the scientific traffic between North America and Europe.
His son Felix Flügel (1820–1904) and his grandson Ewald Flügel (1863–1914) followed in his footsteps as Anglicists / Americanists and lexicographers. The latter completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1888 with Richard Paul Wülker , before he accepted an appointment at Stanford University in 1892 .
