Johann Jacob Römer
Johann Jacob Römer (born January 8, 1763 in Zurich , Switzerland ; † January 15, 1819 there ; also written Roemer ) was a Swiss doctor, entomologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Roem. "
Life
Römer was professor of botany and director of the old botanical garden "zur Katz" at the University of Zurich .
From 1784 he studied medicine and biology at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1786 with a dissertation on a gynecological topic for Dr. med. In 1788, Römer became a member of the Swiss Scientific Society and then practiced as a doctor in Zurich, although there was no success. This was followed by a job as a doctor at the Zurich infirmary. During the revolutionary years from 1799 to 1803, Römer resigned from the teaching staff of this institution and took over a professor again in 1804 when this institution became a cantonal institute. He practiced there until his death.
With the Austrian botanist Josef August Schultes he published the 16th edition of the Systema Vegetabilium by Carl von Linné . The plant Adenium obesum ssp. obesum was already described and named by Pehr Forsskål , but only Romans and Schultes succeeded in classifying it in the current system.
In 1793 Römer was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , in 1808 a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
Together with Paul Usteri , Römer published the magazine for botany . In 1797, Römer became director of the Botanical Garden in Zurich and finally headed the Presidium of the Botanical Commission of the Zurich Natural Research Society .
Honors
The genus Roemeria Medik. from the poppy family (Papaveraceae) has been named after him.
