Johann Jakob Rüeger (born July 15, 1548 in Schaffhausen ; † August 19, 1606 there ) was pastor and chronicler of Schaffhausen.

Life

Johann Jakob Rüeger was the son of Münster born pastor of Schaffhausen. There he attended Latin school . He then went to high school in Strasbourg and later to Zurich , where he studied theology. In 1570 Rüeger was appointed to Schwanden through the mediation of Heinrich Bullinger . There he made the acquaintance of Aegidius Tschudi . In 1575 Rüeger was employed as an early preacher by the Schaffhausen Minster. He was also a pastor in Buch , Hemmental and Büsingen . From 1577 he was a deacon , and from 1600 chief pastor at the cathedral. From 1592 until his death he was a member of the Scholarchenrat . From 1596 to 1599 he registered the archives of the Allerheiligen Abbey on behalf of the city of Schaffhausen . Johann Jakob Rüeger died on August 19, 1606.

Rüeger was interested in many things. In addition to theology, he also dealt with numismatics , astronomy and mathematics . He was also an avid collector of historical objects and coins. However, when he got into financial difficulties, he had to sell his coin collection in 1600. Rüeger maintained an extensive correspondence with numerous scholars and researchers, also with Catholics, in Switzerland and in southern Germany, among others with Basilius Amerbach , Franz Guillimann , Johann Jakob von Staal , Johann Georg von Werdenstein (1542–1608), Johann Wilhelm Stucki ( 1542–1607), Junker Hans Ulrich von Schellenberg (1518–1606) at Randegg Castle , the Augsburg Adolf Occo (1524–1606), Oswald Gabelkover , Marquard Freher and the Augsburg publisher and book collector Markus Welser .

Works

Although Rüeger enjoyed general respect as a preacher and in practical work, through his efforts to improve the school system in the Scholarchenrat and through his efforts for church singing, it is his works that keep him in mind to this day. He wrote monographs about the old Schaffhausen families Fulach and Im Thurn , with Hans Im Thurn-Stokar he was friends. After completing this work, he devoted himself to the other noble families in alphabetical order, not only about their names and history, but also about their political significance and influence.

In 1595, the Synopsis Historica was an overview of world history.

Rüeger's most important work was a historical-topographical description of the city and landscape of Schaffhausen, the Klettgau and the Reiat , built into an imperial and Swiss history . The work, known today as the Rüeger Chronicle, is an important source for historical research in the Schaffhausen area up to the present day. In response to the news that the Stuttgart Literary Association wanted to publish the chronicle of Johann Jakob Rüeger, Carl August Bächtold made a copy of the chronicle. A specially founded commission of the Schaffhausen Historical Association then decided on July 9, 1878 to publish the Rüeger Chronicle, which then appeared in three parts (in two volumes) from 1892 onwards. Employees were mostly the members of the historical association, including Johann Heinrich Bäschlin (1840–1923) and Albert im Thurn .
