Johann Joachim Lange

Johann Joachim Lange (* 1699 in Berlin , baptized May 25, 1699; † August 18, 1765 in Halle / Saale ) was a German mathematician, poet and mineralogist.

Life

Lange received his first lessons from his father, the theologian Joachim Lange , and private teachers. He then attended the school in the orphanage in Halle. Then he moved to the University of Halle , acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy, gave lectures and was accepted as an adjunct at the Philosophical Faculty in Halle in 1721. As a dean at the university, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the philosophical faculty on December 5, 1723 . In the same year he became a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin . On November 30, 1735, Johann Joachim Lange , nicknamed Apollonius Pergaeus, was accepted as a member ( matriculation no. 450 ) of the Imperial Leopoldine-Carolinian Academy of Natural Scientists , and in 1754 he became a member of the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences in Erfurt .

In the history of the University of Halle, his work as a mathematics professor was judged not to be extraordinary, as he was always overshadowed by Christian Wolff . However, he has made a name for himself through his writings in the field of mineralogy, which were published by Julius Johann Madihn (1734–1789) after his death . He also appeared as a poet at the graduation of Dorothea Christiane Erxleben . Lange also took part in the organizational tasks of the University of Halle and was Vice-Rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1735 and in 1749/1750 and 1760/1761 as academic director . His wife Johanna Dorothea (née Kaiser; † July 22, 1772 in Halle) married the Halle professor Johann Friedrich Stiebritz on October 27, 1771 .
