Johann Lucas Kracker (born March 3, 1717 in Vienna , † December 1, 1779 in Erlau (Hungary)) was an Austro-Czech painter of the late Baroque . He mainly created ceiling , panel and altar pictures in monasteries and churches. His main works are the design of the Jasov monastery and the Council of Trento in Eger. Kracker is considered one of the most important baroque fresco painters of the Habsburg monarchy .

Life

Kracker was the son of the painter Josef Kracker (1683-1733), his mother was Anna Katharina Kracker (née Wilde). He received his first training from the painter Anton Hertzog (1692–1740) and continued it from 1738 at the Vienna Academy . In 1742 he created frescoes for the St. Martin Castle Church in Graz , which have not survived. After working in Moravia , including in Znojmo , he worked in Upper Hungary from 1754 . He worked in Šaštín and Nižna Šebaštova, among others . In 1760/61, despite objections from the Prague painters' guild, he painted the frescoes in the Church of St. Nicholas . From 1762 to 1764 he painted the Jasov Monastery and the Premonstratensian Church in Jasov .

In 1767 he settled in Erlau. Bishop Karl von Esterházy commissioned him with work in Eger and in the diocese of Eger as well as in the bishop's possessions. In 1770 he created the main altarpiece for the Minorite Church . His later major work, The Council of Trento, was written in Erlau in 1777 .

His students included his son-in-law Josef Zach, who was married to Cracker's daughter Theresia, and Josef Zirckler (1750–1797).
