Johann Wilhelm Hönert (born May 2, 1723 in Bremen ; † November 20, 1790 in St. Jürgen, Lilienthal ) was a German pastor and church historian. At 32 years of age, he had the longest term of office as pastor of the St. Juergens Church in Lilienthal and with extensive records about the church and its history, he made extraordinary contributions to the community.

family

Hönert was born as the son of pastor Johann Benjamin Hönert (1695–1750) and Margarethe Elisabeth Hönert, née von Mordeisen. In 1750 he married Sophie Catharina Günthersen († 1782). The marriage had six children. In 1783 Hönert married his second wife Maria Elisabeth Rimphoffen († 1822), the daughter of the royal tax lender from Hastedt .

Working life

Up to the age of 14, Hönert attended the cathedral school in Bremen and after his father was transferred from 1735 to the Stadische Schule in Stade . In 1743 he began studying at the University of Jena and worked as a private tutor at the count's court in Ebersdorf in the Vogtland . Seven years later he passed his exams in Stade and in the same year, at the insistence of his father, got a job as school principal in Dorum . During the fire in the patch in 1757, he lost almost all of his belongings, including his extensive library. Hönert was temporarily appointed pastor of Bevern before he began his service at the St. Juergens Church on April 20, 1758 - a position he would hold until his death. In 1770 he studied with a Bünemann in Hanover because of his great musical talent .

As an enlightened person, Hönert was very interested in history and documented countless facts, legends and anecdotes in his main work from 1770 and in the church registers. These entries still serve as the main source about the community today. At the same time, however, the pastor was very derogatory towards the ancient and cult and removed not only wooden sculptures of saints, but also, for example, mural paintings from the nave that seemed inappropriate to him. Hönert was considered to be very interested in nature and well-read. In 1780 he published an article with drawings in the Hanoverian magazine under the title Something from the catch of the wild swimming and marsh birds as a special food branch in the Sanct Juergenslande, Duchy of Bremen .
