Johanna Quaas (born November 20, 1925 in Hohenmölsen as Johanna Geißler ) is a German gymnast . She is the oldest competitive gymnast in the world.

Life and career

She started gymnastics at an early age and competed in her first competition in 1934. After finishing school, the mandatory compulsory year followed and later the labor service. In 1945 she completed her training as a sports teacher in Stuttgart . Then she moved to Weißenfels , where she devoted herself to handball , since gymnastics had been banned by the occupying powers as an alleged "military training". With the end of the ban in 1947, she began to do gymnastics again. From 1950 she studied at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. She completed her studies with the state examination and then worked as a trainer for physical education teachers at the Institute for Physical Education, founded in 1948. As an author, she contributed to the creation of the textbook apparatus gymnastics .

During this time Quaas did gymnastics in the University Sports Association Science Halle . From 1961 she initially worked as a gymnastics trainer at SC Chemie Halle and later as a vocational school teacher. Among other things, she trained the gymnasts Barbara Dix-Stolz and Christel Felgner-Wunder , who were nominated for participation in the 1964 Olympic Games and competed there for the all-German team . At the age of 57, Quaas began active gymnastics again in 1982 and the following year she became GDR champion at the VII GDR gymnastics and sports festival in Leipzig . After the reunification she took part in all German gymnastics festivals from 1990 onwards .

Quaas became known in 2012 through several YouTube videos that she showed during appearances at the championship tournament in the Cottbus Lausitz-Arena . The videos developed into viral clips and reached several million views within a very short time. Numerous television and newspaper reports followed in German and international media, including reports on the American television stations NBC and ABC as well as an appearance on Gottschalk Live . The German gymnast was also reported in numerous Chinese newspapers.

On September 13, 2012, it was announced that Quaas received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as "the oldest female gymnast in the world". She replaces Inge Kaatz from the HSG DHfK Leipzig, who died in 2010 .

In 2015, Johanna Quaas was honored with the Nadia Comaneci Sportsmanship Award in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame as the oldest competitive gymnast in Oklahoma.

For Queen Elisabeth II - both were ninety years old at the time - Johanna Quaas jumped from a height of 3000 m at the Böhlen airfield on June 5, 2016 with the parachute. Your tandem partner was Eberhard Gienger . In contrast to the Queen, who was doubled together with James Bond actor Daniel Craig during the parachute jump on the occasion of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London for the opening ceremony , Johanna Quaas proved the authenticity of the jump.

On June 24th 2017 Johanna Quaas took part in the celebrity jumping at the jump of my life by Andreas Wels in the Nordbad in Halle (Saale) .

Quaas is a member of the State Gymnastics Association of Saxony-Anhalt and the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Society .
