history

In 1483 a school was mentioned on a map of the "new" royal seat of Countess Theda , a granddaughter of Fokko Ukena and widow Ulrich Cirksenas (although the Low German school is used here, which also allows a different interpretation)

The Latin school was first mentioned in 1505 and moved to the St. Gertruden Inn and its chapel. In 1573 the school moved to a new building, in which it was housed for 304 years until 1877. In 1617 the school had 184 students.

In 1836 the Latin school was recognized as a grammar school. In 1877 the school moved to the newly constructed building, and was named after Emperor I. Wilhelm Wilhelmsgymnasium . named. In 1886 the higher middle school was branched off from the grammar school and received in 1888 Emperor Friedrich III. the name Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule . In 1927 the Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule became an upper secondary school and in 1935 a secondary school. It was recognized again as a full institution in 1939 and was named Oberschule for Boys .

In 1949 the Wilhelmsgymnasium and the Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule were merged into one school by contract between the state of Lower Saxony and the city of Emden. In 1959, the school moved into the newly built building on Früchteburger Weg in the Früchteburg district of Emden , where further educational and cultural institutions were built in the following years, which earned the quarter the (nick) name of the Kulturviertel . In 1971 it became a coeducational school and in 1972 it was named Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium .

From 2007 to 2020, various additions were made, such as the large fitness studio, the new art studio and a large cafeteria. In 2016 the sports field was renewed. Currently (2019) eight new classrooms are under construction. The JAG had various branches: In Pewsum around 370 pupils from the Krummhörn were taught in grades 5 to 8 until 2014 .
