Johann Baptist Georg Franzelin (born April 15, 1816 in Aldein , South Tyrol , † December 11, 1886 in Rome ) was an Austrian Jesuit , cardinal and theologian.

Life

Franzelin entered the Societas Jesu in 1834 at the age of 18 after the obligatory novitiate . a. He studied philosophy and then worked for some time as a lecturer in Tarnopol and Lemberg in Galicia .

In 1845 Franzelin went to the Collegium Romanum of the Gregoriana in Rome . Three years later his order sent him to Great Britain. He was later able to return to Rome and successfully complete his studies. Immediately afterwards he was entrusted with a teaching position there; u. a. for oriental languages. On December 23, 1849, he was ordained priest for the Society of Jesus.

Between 1857 and 1876 Franzelin held the chair for dogmatics . As such, he also acted as a consultor for various congregations . In addition, he was instrumental in the drafting of several constitutions of the First Vatican Council .

Pope Pius IX created Franzelin in the consistory on April 3, 1876 as cardinal priest of the titular church Santi Bonifacio e Alessio . He took part in the conclave of 1878 , from which Leo XIII. emerged as Pope. From March 28, 1885 he was prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics .

Franzelin died on December 11, 1886 in Rome after receiving the sacraments from Pierre Jean Beckx , Superior General of the Jesuits , and was initially buried in the Campo Verano cemetery. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, his bones were transferred to the parish church of his birthplace Aldein and buried there on May 19, 1986.

Aftermath

The middle school in Laives bears his name JK Franzelin.
