Johannes Elias Teijsmann
Johannes Elias Teijsmann or Teysmann (born June 1, 1808 , † June 22, 1882 in Buitenzorg ) was a Dutch botanist. Its botanical author's abbreviation is “ Teijsm. "
Live and act
Teijsmann arrived in Java in 1830 and was hired as a gardener by the Dutch governor general van den Bosch. From 1831 to 1860 he was the curator of the Buitenzorg Botanical Garden ( Bogor ).
He took part in several botanical excursions to the Sunda Islands, Malaysia, Thailand, what was then Siam and New Guinea. He introduced the oil palm from West Africa to Indonesia, which is still one of the islands' most important agricultural products today. Teijsmann discovered and described many species of orchids and tropical plants, often in collaboration with the Dutch botanist Simon Binnendijk, his scientific assistant. Together they created two extensive plant catalogs.
Honors
- The genus name Teysmannia Miq. from the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae), the name of the palm genus Johannesteijsmannia H.E.Moore and the name of the genus Teijsmanniodendron coord. of the family Lamiaceae (Lamiaceae) him are named in his honor.
- He was a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
