Johannes Henricus Brand (born December 6, 1823 in Cape Town , † July 14, 1888 in Bloemfontein ) was a South African politician and President of the Orange Free State .

Life

Johannes Henricus was the son of Sir Christoffel Brand, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Cape Colony . He attended the South African College in Cape Town, studied in England and Leiden and received his doctorate in both rights in 1845 . He was inducted into the Inner Temple Bar Association in 1849 and served as an attorney in the Cape Colony until 1863. In 1851 he married Johanna Sibella Zastron; with her he had eight sons and three daughters. From 1858 he taught law at the South African College.

In 1863 he was elected President of the Orange Free State, which had been independent since 1854. In 1869, 1874, 1879 and 1884 he was re-elected. From 1865 to 1868 he led the Seqiti war against the Basotho under Moshoeshoe I. In 1871 he was offered the presidency of the Transvaal , which would have united the two Boer republics . The Volksraad , the parliament of the Orange Free State, refused, however, and Brand maintained the friendly policy towards Great Britain. In December 1880 he was able to successfully mediate in the conflict between the Transvaal and Great Britain. In 1882 he was awarded the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG) by Great Britain .

The town of Brandfort in the Orange Free State was named after Brand in 1875 .
