Johannes Kappel
Johannes Kappel (born July 2, 1855 in Rapla-Uusküla, today rural municipality Rapla , Estonia ; † June 1, 1907 in Schömberg , Württemberg ) was an Estonian composer and organist .
Life
Johannes Kappel was born in today's Rapla district. He received his first musical education from his father, and later from the organist in the town of Paide , where the family had moved. In 1872 Kappel went to Saint Petersburg to find work and other training opportunities. At first he worked as a teacher. Kappel studied from 1876 at the city's conservatory the subjects organ with Louis Homilius and composition with Julius Johannsen . In 1881 he passed his exam. Koppel worked until the end of his life as a church organist for the Dutch embassy in Saint Petersburg. In addition, he was the leader of several Estonian choirs and is closely connected to the choral tradition of his homeland.
Johannes Kappel died during a spa stay in Württemberg .
Musical work
Kappel composed numerous late romantic choral works and songs for solo singing that were influenced by traditional folk music. The pieces are very melodic, but often have a sentimental character. Kappel also published compilations for choral singing and music textbooks. Kappel also became known as the leader of the third (1880), fifth (1894) and sixth (1896) general Estonian song festivals . Kappel is considered to be the first professional Estonian musician.
