Johannes Karl Schuth , also Johannes Carl Schuth , (born January 28, 1852, probably in Koblenz , † 1904 in Koblenz) was a German printer , bookseller and publisher in Koblenz.

Life

Schuth was the son of the main teacher from Ehrenbreitstein, Johannes Schuth (1818–1880) and Therese Schneider (1818–1863), married to Apollonia Schuth, geb. Bodenbach (born May 30, 1858 in Cochem , † January 4, 1944).

Schuth ran the company he founded in the early 1880s in Koblenz's Rheinstrasse for a few decades, and for many years also worked as a publisher and bookseller. However, the publishing house operated under the title Johannes Schuth, Koblenz (i.e. without the middle name Karl ). From about 30 years, only about 20 publications are known. These mainly concerned books with a Catholic-religious content, but also those with an art-historical reference. In addition, from December 1, 1894 to April 1, 1908, Schuth published the Rhein- und Mosel-Boten (Catholic General-Anzeiger for town and country), a daily newspaper with a clearly Catholic orientation. (Printing and publishing: Johannes Schuth, Koblenz, Marktstrasse 7). However, the paper was unable to hold its own against the Koblenzer Volkszeitung in the long term .

The Johannes Schuth publishing house existed until 1916. The branch of the Josef Kösel'schen Buchhandlung in Kempten belonging to the publishing house was more successful. Compared to the well-known Koblenz publishers (such as Rudolph Friedrich Christian Hergt , Pierre Bernard Francois Hériot , Jakob Hölscher , Franz Friedrich Röhling , Krabben and Karl Baedeker ), the company Verlag von Johannes Schuth, Coblenz (Koblenz) is more likely to belong the smaller publishers in this city.

family

Johannes Schuth had a son of the same name among his 5 children, who was a Catholic clergyman, grammar school teacher, archivist and local historian. Under the name of Johannes Schuth, he also published numerous works nationwide, also mainly with a Catholic-religious content and should therefore not be confused with his father!
