Johannes Preiser-Kapeller

Johannes Preiser-Kapeller (born on August 24, 1977 in Zwettl ) is an Austrian Byzantinist , global historian and environmental historian .

Career

After graduating from the Federal High School in Zwettl in 1995 and completing his military service, Preiser-Kapeller studied Byzantine and Neo -Greek Studies as well as Ancient History and Classical Studies at the University of Vienna from 1996 . In 2002 he obtained his master's degree in Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies with a thesis on Byzantine administration in Armenia from the 4th to the 7th centuries. 2006 took place doctorate in Byzantine Studies at Otto Kresten and Werner Seibt with a dissertation on episcopacy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel in Palaeologi (1258-1453) who in 2008 appeared in print. After completing his studies, he worked on the new edition of the regests of the imperial charter of the Eastern Roman Empire for the period 565 to 867 and on the edition of the Patriarchal Register of Constantinople , a central source on the history of the church in the 14th century.

He works at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , Institute for Medieval Research, Byzantium Research Department, where he heads the research area “Byzantium in Context”. He is co-editor of the Yearbook of Austrian Byzantine Studies and the Studies in Global Migration History series and a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Historical Network Research and the Climate Change and History Research Initiative (Princeton). He also teaches regularly at the University of Vienna.

He is the author of several monographs and essays and the editor of several edited volumes. His main research interests are the history and social history of the Byzantine Empire and the Mediterranean area in comparison and in the global interdependence of the medieval world, historical network analysis , complexity research and historical migration research ( late antiquity and early Middle Ages ). Furthermore, he deals with the environmental and climatic history of the Middle Ages and the history of the medieval Caucasus region . His monograph “Beyond Rome and Charlemagne. Aspects of the global interdependence in the long late antiquity, 300–800 AD "was selected by the jury of the magazine Damals among the best historical books of 2018 (3rd place in the category" Overview ") and placed on the 2019 longlist of the science book of the year in Austria.

He is also regularly active in the popular dissemination of knowledge to adults and children (within the framework of the Vienna Adult Education Centers or the Vienna Children's University) and was awarded the Werner Welzig Prize of the Austrian Academy in 2012 for his commitment to public relations, especially in the field of science education Sciences excellent.
