John Proelß (* 4. July 1853 in Dresden , † 21st September 1911 in Know castle in Esslingen am Neckar ) was a German writer, translator, journalist and literary historian.

life and work

Johannes Proelß was the son of the Dresden businessman, dramaturge, theater critic and historian Robert Prölß (1821–1906). He studied philosophy and history in Jena and Leipzig and originally wanted to become a librarian. Essentially, however, Proelß earned his living in the years to come as an editor and journalist. At the end of 1875 he joined the editorial team of the Börsenblatt for the German book trade , and from 1877 to 1881 he edited the general literary correspondence . On July 1, 1881 Proelß moved from Leipzig to Frankfurt am Main, where he took over the editing of the feature pages of the Frankfurter Zeitung . Ten years later, in 1891, he went to Stuttgart and worked here in the editorial department of the magazine Vom Fels zum Meer and for the Stuttgart publishing house Union. Between 1894 and 1903 Proelß directed the family magazine Die Gartenlaube . Since then he has lived as a freelance writer.

After Karl Gutzkow died in December 1878, Proelß began to work on a comprehensive Gutzkow biography calculated in two volumes. Proelß collected information, letters and other material from Gutzkow's contemporaries who were still alive and looked through Gutzkow's estate from his widow in Frankfurt am Main. He was the first who was able to view and use the unprinted correspondence with Gutzkow in the archives of the Cotta'schen Verlagbuchhandlung . For unknown reasons, this first major Gutzkow biography remained unprinted, although several bio-bibliographical reference works state that it was published (Karl Gutzkow. Leben u. Werke. 2 vol., 1880–1881). Proelß integrated the parts about the young Gutzkow into his work Das Junge Deutschland, published in 1892 . In addition to this pioneering work for literary studies and university German studies at the time, which for the first time dealt in detail with the young German literary period between 1830 and 1840 and whose focus is on Heinrich Heine and Ludwig Börne , but above all Karl Gutzkow and Heinrich Laube , his important literary-historical works include those about Joseph Victor von Scheffel and Friedrich Stoltze . He was also in regular correspondence with Wilhelm Busch .

Proelß published his works with various publishers, but above all in the publishing house Adolf Bonz & Comp , headed by Alfred Bonz and founded by his father Adolf Bonz . and the family business run by Felix August Matthaeus Liebeskind , which later became part of the Cotta'sche publishing house .

Proelß was married to Anna Creizenach (1859–1911), a daughter of Theodor Creizenach in Frankfurt am Main , since June 8, 1882 . The marriage had three children.
