Life

Johannes Stöhr was born in Berlin as one of six siblings. He passed his Abitur at the Canisius College in Berlin. After the study of philosophy and theology in Freiburg in 1958 Stöhr carried ordination . He received his doctorate in 1956 with a thesis on the theology of Blessed Raimundus Lullus . On August 1, 1958, he was first chaplain in the Mater Dolorosa parish in Berlin-Lankwitz and a year later in the Rosary Basilica in Berlin-Steglitz . After his habilitation in 1963 on The Theological Science Teaching of Juan de Perlin SJ , he became a lecturer in Freiburg i. Br., Then from 1966 extraordinary professor for dogmatic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University in Bamberg . When this went up in 1973 in the University of Bamberg , Stöhr became a full professor or chair holder for the subject at the university. He has retired since 1999 and works as a subsidiary in the Cologne inner-city parish of St. Pantaleon, which is run by the clergy of Opus Dei . Johannes Stöhr has lived in Cologne since then.

In 1970 he was appointed a Magister at the Raimundus Lullus Academy of the Spanish Research Council. He also came into closer contact with Opus Dei in Bavaria in the early 1970s and was recruited by Klaus Becker , the first German Opus Dei numerator and later diocesan judge in the Archdiocese of Cologne , whom he had met at the Würzburg Synod . This brought Stöhr into contact with the University of Navarra run by the organization . Stöhr applied for membership in the Opus Dei Priestly Society of the Holy Cross and in the 1980s became visiting professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, which is also run by Opus Dei , and at the University of Navarra in Pamplona since 1988 , as well as at Gustav-Siewerth -Akademie in Weilheim-Bierbronnen and in the St. Petrus seminary in Wigratzbad . He also gave lectures about once a month in the seminary of the diocese of San Bernardo near Santiago de Chile , established in 1987 , which is also in the hands of Opus Dei. After his retirement in 1999, he held a professorship for dogmatics and medieval intellectual history at the Gustav-Siewerth-Akademie and headed the department for Catholic theology there .

Johannes Stöhr was co-editor (with German Rovira ) of the Mariological Yearbook published by the International Mariological Working Group in Kevelaer (IMAK), an institution of Opus Dei established in 1977 . He has written numerous scientific publications in German and Spanish , a. a. Article in the Marienlexikon edited by Remigius Bäumer and Leo Scheffczyk , in the Lexicon for Theology and Church , and in other theological and philosophical reference works and specialist journals.

Even after his retirement, Stöhr comments on current theological or university issues in the journal Theologisches , in which he is the responsible editor. For him, the inclusion of songs by Martin Luther or Huub Oosterhuis in the Praise of God published in 2013 is “scandalous”.
