John Aitken (born February 1870 or November 11, 1870 in Dumfries , † 1919 ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Aitken played in Dumfries, South Scotland for the 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers , before he was signed by the Northern English second division club Newton Heath in the summer of 1895 , who at the same time signed another Scottish player with David Fitzsimmons . Although Aitken in the Scottish press was credited with "abundance of speed, which he combines with his size and good shooting power" in his move , Aitken did not succeed in asserting himself at the Manchester- based club.

Although he scored a goal on his debut on September 7, 1895, a 5-0 win at the start of the season against Crewe Alexandra , the Athletic News stated in its match report that he had to "put more vigor into his efforts." The following game against Loughborough FC was given preference to James Peters , who mostly accompanied the position in the following months. Three weeks after his debut, Aitken was again in the squad as a left winger in the second leg against Crewe Alexandra , but received bad reviews from the press despite a 2-0 win, which attested him an insecure demeanor as well as passing and shooting skills in need of improvement. This was also his last assignment; at the end of the year he left Newton Heath.
