John Anderson (actor)
John Anderson (born October 20, 1922 in Clayton , Illinois , † August 7, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor .
life and career
Anderson grew up in Quincy , Illinois, USA. Prior to his acting career, Anderson worked for the United States Coast Guard during World War II . He had one of his best known early roles as the used car dealer in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Psycho . Anderson starred on television in popular western series such as Bonanza , Smoking Colts , West of Santa Fe, and Big Valley . Anderson played western hero Virgil Earp five times in his career . Another historical person who played Anderson three times was the American President Abraham Lincoln . He looked very much like this one, and like Lincoln he was very tall, almost two meters. He also played President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1979 miniseries White House, Backstairs at the White House .
He became known to German audiences in the 1980s for his recurring role as MacGyver's grandfather in the series of the same name . He also played Dr. Herbert Styles in the series Dallas . In total, he appeared in over 200 film and television shows.
John Anderson died of a heart attack in 1992 at the age of 69. He left two children and five grandchildren. He was cremated and his ashes scattered in the sea. This happened as part of his membership in the "Neptune Society".
