John Astin
John Allen Astin (born March 30, 1930 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American actor and director in film and television. Probably his best-known role is that of family man Gomez Addams in the US television series The Addams Family , which first aired from 1964 to 1966.
Life
John Astin was born in Baltimore , Maryland , the son of Margaret Linnie Mackenzie and Dr. Allen Varley Astin was born. After high school, he first attended Washington & Jefferson College and studied mathematics, but he moved to Johns Hopkins University , where he received his degree in drama. During his student days he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity .
Astin married Suzanne Hahn in 1956, with whom he has three children, but the marriage only lasted until 1972. This was followed by a marriage with actress Patty Duke , from which the actor Mackenzie Astin emerged. The actor Sean Astin , who played Samweis Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy , grew out of a very short marriage to Duke . But this marriage also ended in divorce in 1985. John Astin has been in a relationship with Valerie Ann Sandobal since 1989. The actor and his current wife are head of the Buddhist Association of Santa Monica and both vegetarians.
Career
John Astin began his career in the theater and working as a voice actor for commercials. He got his first role in the form of a brief appearance as a social worker in the movie musical West Side Story in 1961. He then joined in some sitcoms on before the role of the early 1960s, Gomez Addams in the series The Addams Family received . This role made him known to a wide audience. In the series produced by FOX between 1988 and 1999 , The New Addams Family , he played the role of Grampapa Addams .
As a result, he got bigger roles like that of Riddler (in Germany puzzle cracker ) in the series Batman (as an interim replacement for Frank Gorshin ). Working in Harry's wondrous criminal court and on the series Murder is her hobby complemented the repertoire.
Astin was nominated for an Oscar for the short film Prelude (1968), which he wrote and produced , received the Ace Award for his work on the series Stories from the Crypt, and was Emmy- nominated for his work as voice actor in the cartoon series The Addams Family .
He continued his acting as Professor Albert Wickwire in the western series The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and continued as Professor Gangreen in the Killer Tomato films .
Astin teaches acting and directing at Johns Hopkins University .
