John Burke (composer)

John Burke (born May 10, 1951 in Toronto , Ontario , † January 18, 2020 in Marmora , Ontario) was a Canadian composer and music teacher .

life and career

Burke studied at McGill University with Bruce Mather and Alcides Lanza and at the University of Michigan with William Albright , Leslie Bassett , William Bolcom and George Wilson . After winning two prizes at the CBC National Radio Competition for young composers in 1978, he studied with Eugene Kurtz for a year in Paris with the support of the Canada Council .

On his return he gave guest lectures in music theory and electronic music at McGill University and taught at McMaster University from 1983 to 1985 . After giving private lessons in Toronto until 1990, he became a member of the University of Victoria Faculty of Music .

From 1996 he participated in the program The Power of Sound by Don G. Campbell , which is rooted in the Human Potential Movement and which deals with the healing effects of music. In the following years he worked with Jean Houston , a pioneer of the Human Potential Movement, for whose World-Wide Labyrinth Project he composed a series of chamber music works ( labyrinth music ) in the early 200s .
