John Derbyshire (writer)
John Derbyshire (born June 3, 1945 in Northampton ) is a British-American mathematician, journalist and writer.
Life
Derbyshire studied mathematics at University College London with a bachelor's degree in 1966. He worked as a teacher and became a programmer in 1969. a. for financial firms in New York, but also took up a wandering life that also took him to China. In 1980 he graduated in Chinese from London and lived in England and China. Partly he taught, partly he was a programmer. From 1985 to 1999 he worked for the First Boston Bank (Credit Suisse First Boston) as a system programmer (partly freelance on a contract basis) and was then a writer.
He wrote a column for National Review and for various journals including New English Review , The New Criterion , The American Conservative, and The Washington Times . He was dismissed as a National Review columnist because of an anti-African American article in Taki's Magazine (The Talk: Nonblack Version, April 2012) criticized as being racist . He spoke out in favor of stricter immigration rules in the United States. He also expressed his conservative beliefs in the book We are doomed .
He is known for a popular science book on the Riemann Hypothesis ( Prime Obsession ), which won the Euler Book Prize .
Derbyshire is married to a Chinese woman and has a daughter and a son. He lives in Huntington, New York .
