Stations in his professional life:

He was an important exponent of general linguistics. His main areas of research were general grammar and semantics . The two most influential works are the Introduction to theoretical linguistics from 1968, which served as an introductory work for an entire generation of linguists, and its comprehensive treatment of semantics (1977). With the philosophically based typology of various modalities in a chapter of the latter work, Lyons initiated modern research in the field of modality . Both his Introduction to Modern Linguistics and Die Sprache , like his book on Noam Chomsky, saw several editions in the German-speaking world.

In 1987 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir") for his services as a linguist .
