John McIntire
John Herrick McIntire (born June 27, 1907 in Spokane , † January 30, 1991 in Pasadena , California ) was an American actor .
Life
John McIntire grew up among cowboys in the state of Montana . The University of Southern California graduate began his acting career in radio and theater. Among other things, he worked as a radio announcer for The March of Time . McIntire made his film debut in 1947 with a minor supporting role in The Greyhound and the Lady alongside Clark Gable . In the following decades he played in around 85 films and almost 60 television series, often impersonating authority figures such as sheriffs, police officers or politicians in supporting roles. He was a preferred actor in crime films and westerns .
In John Huston's film noir classic Asphalt-Jungle (1950) McIntire played the strict police chief; In 1954 he was seen in Anthony Mann's western On the Death Pass as a corrupt opponent of James Stewart . He played one of his most famous roles as the village sheriff Al Chambers in Alfred Hitchcock's classic Psycho (1960). From the late 1950s he played leading roles in several very successful American television series, including the popular western series Wagon Train , in which he played the wagon master Christopher Hale in a total of 152 episodes between 1959 and 1965 .
McIntire was married to actress Jeanette Nolan from 1935 until his death . At an advanced age, McIntire and Nolan gave their voices to cartoons like Bernard and Bianca and Cap and Capper . McIntire and Nolan had two children, son Tim McIntire (1944-1986) was also an actor. John McIntire died of lung cancer at the age of 83 .
