John Phillips (singer)
John Edmund Andrew Phillips (born August 30, 1935 in Parris Island , South Carolina , † March 18, 2001 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American musician and composer .
Life
As Papa John, John Phillips co-founded the group The Mamas and the Papas . For the group he composed hits like California Dreamin ' , but also wrote for others, for example San Francisco for Scott McKenzie . From 1962 to 1968 he was married to band member Michelle Phillips . Their daughter, Chynna Phillips , was a singer with Wilson Phillips . In 1967 Phillips was one of the organizers of the Monterey Pop Festival .
On January 25, 1970 his first solo album, John Phillips (John, the Wolf King of LA) was released . After Mamas & Papas dissolved , John Phillips was never able to build on his old successes. In 1975 Phillips was commissioned to compose the soundtrack for the film The Man Who Fell From Heaven by Nicolas Roeg . The Beach Boys had one of their greatest hits with the song Kokomo , which he co-composed and which was also part of the soundtrack for the film Cocktail .
The Mamas and the Papas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. John Phillips died of heart failure in Los Angeles in 2001.

John Phillips has been married three times, including to Michelle Phillips, who is the co-founder and last surviving member of The Mamas and The Papas . He had five children from these marriages. His daughter Chynna Phillips was very successful with the music group Wilson Phillips in the early 1990s , together with the two daughters of Brian Wilson . His daughter Bijou Phillips is known as an actress and singer. His daughter Mackenzie Phillips , an actress, appeared in American Graffiti (1973) and The Party is over… The sequel to American Graffiti (1979). In her book High on Arrival , Mackenzie Phillips reports on her excessive drug experiences and the incest relationship with her father John, which took place for ten years from the age of 18.
