John Milford Rutter , CBE (born September 24, 1945 in London ) is a British composer and choir director .

Career

Rutter studied music at Clare College in Cambridge and was its music director from 1975 to 1979 . In 1981 he founded the Cambridge Singers , which he has been leading ever since, a professional chamber choir that focuses primarily on recordings. Rutter is currently considered one of the most important and popular composers of choral and church music .

Musically it can be assigned to postmodernism . His works are anchored in the European cadenza , but treat this frame of reference in a sovereign and original way. A multi-layered harmonics and rhythm, which also takes up jazz elements, and a melodic inventiveness give Rutter's music suggestive power. Textual and melodic quotations from far back eras are also incorporated.
