John Daniel Singleton (born January 6, 1968 in Los Angeles , California ; † April 28, 2019 there ) was an American film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Singleton was born the son of a mortgage broker and an industrial clerk. After his parents' divorce, they mutually raised him until he began studying at the University of Southern California . From 1996 to 1997 Singleton was married to actress Akosua Busia .

On April 17, 2019, Singleton suffered a severe stroke at the age of 51 and was then in a coma . According to The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ.com , his mother, Sheila Ward, applied for guardianship in a Los Angeles court to represent her son's interests. On April 29, 2019, life-sustaining measures were discontinued at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center .

Act

After receiving numerous awards for his scripts written during his studies, he received a contract with the Creative Artists Agency in his second year . Singleton was nominated for Best Director in 1992 for his debut Boyz n the Hood at the Academy Awards . At the age of 24 he was the youngest and also the first African American director to receive this honor in Hollywood . The success of the milieu study, which is essentially based on experiences from his youth in the race-rioted South Central LA , put him on a par with the young Orson Welles in the eyes of some critics and made him one of the most important new directors in Hollywood and New Black Cinema .

In 1993's follow-up Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur , he stayed true to the genre. The historical crime film Rosewood with Jon Voight and Ving Rhames from 1997 is considered by many film critics to be Singleton's strongest work, but was largely spurned by the audience. His film Shaft - Any questions? from 2000 with Samuel L. Jackson was his most expensive project and received a mixed response from the criticism. With Baby Boy from 2001 he returned to the roots of his first work, without being able to follow the success of Boyz n the Hood with it or with the subsequent films, 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and Four Brothers (2005) .

After Breathless - Dangerous Truth from 2011, he worked as a television director for various television series. He was also involved in the development of the Snowfall series.

Occasionally Singleton had cameo appearances in his films, for example in Shaft as a bored cop or in Boyz n the Hood as a postman.
