He was a son of Sir John Willoughby and Jane Welby. From today's point of view, he was entitled to the title of 8th Baron Latymer de iure , but he did not assert this during his lifetime.

Sir John served as sheriff in Wiltshire 1453/54 and 1472/73 and Somerset and Dorset 1455/56.

As Knight of the Shire for Wiltshire and Somerset, he repeatedly attended sessions of Parliament .

Willoughby fought for the House of Lancaster at the Battle of Towton during the Wars of the Roses in 1461 . After the defeat, John Willoughby received pardon from the victorious new King Edward IV .

In the further course of the wars Sir John stood loyal to Edward IV and fought in his army in 1471 in the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury . Following the latter Battle of Tewkesbury, Edward IV beat him on May 4, 1471, while still on the battlefield to become a Knight Bachelor .

Sir John died around 1477.
