The Joliot-Curie-Gymnasium is a general secondary school that leads to higher education entrance qualifications. The school is located on the north side of Wilhelmsplatz in the East Saxon city of Görlitz . It is one of two high schools in the city and is sponsored by them. The high school offers the natural and social sciences profile.

Name of the school

The school is named after the French physicist and Nobel laureate in chemistry, Frédéric Joliot-Curie (1900–1958). In 1925 he became Marie Curie's assistant at the Institut du Radium. A year later he married their daughter Irène. He and his wife were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for the synthesis of a radionuclide . He later worked as a professor at the Collège de France and was active in the Resistance during the German occupation in World War II . After the war, he refused to participate in the development and construction of a French atom bomb.

history

The school building around 1875

In the years 1872/1873 the school building for the trade school, which had existed since 1852, was built on Wilhelmsplatz. The trade school was closed just a few years later, so that in 1882 the Luisenschule - a higher school for girls - moved into the building. The girls' school went back to the Gersdorffsche Frauenzimmer-Institut , founded in 1781 . In 1927 the building was expanded and a third floor was added. Until the 1950s, the school was reserved for girls only. Only after merging with the Lessing School in 1950, boys and girls are taught together in the house. The Abitur can also be taken since the same year. The school has been named Frédéric Joliot-Curies since 1959. In the GDR school system, it was the city's only extended secondary school (EOS). It was the only school in the city where you could get a university entrance qualification. After the turnaround and the associated reorganization of the school system, the EOS was restructured into today's grammar school. From now on, students from the fifth grade up to the tenth grade in the lower secondary level and students in the eleventh and twelfth grade students in the upper secondary level learned in the grammar school. In 2002 the grammar school merged with the Königshufen grammar school. The school building in Königshufen was closed after merging.

building

The school building was built in the neo-renaissance style. The western and eastern wings are in line with the neighboring residential buildings. The main entrance to the building is on the west wing behind four columns. In the east wing there is a passage into the inner courtyard. Here, too, four pillars support the floors above. The columns, but also the facade on the ground floor, are plastered in a rough stone block look. The first and second floors are divided by Corinthian style columns . Until the addition in the 1920s, the building only had two floors. The frieze above the second floor, which rests on the pillars, once formed the cornice of the building. The third floor was optically adapted to the existing part of the building. The columns structure the facade on this floor as well. There is a gable with a clock above the central part of the building.

The auditorium adjoins the building to the west in the courtyard. It is used today for larger events or exams. To the east of the main building is a three-story annex.

Educational work, equipment and offers

Since 2006, all-day offers have also been integrated into the school day at the grammar school. In addition to typical groups such as homework supervision, woodworking or artistic ones such as pottery and the like, there are also offers for metalworking. In addition, there has been a school newspaper for a long time, the development of which, from finding article topics and advertisers to the layout and sale of the newspaper, is increasingly being handled independently by the students.

Furnishing

The school has two chemistry cabinets on the ground floor and cabinets for physics and biology classes on the third floor. Rooms are also available for IT lessons. For a long time, a special feature was that each graduate class was allowed to design a room in the school according to a topic. For example, rooms with an entrance door in the look of an English telephone booth or a city map of the center of Krakow in the Polish classroom were created . After the renovation, which was completed in March 2014, such a design by the students was no longer permitted. The school has its own library.

Joliot Curie Week

Every school year, the so-called Joliot Curie Week takes place in March . During this week, the students can engage with scientific projects. Regional companies and institutions enable the students to try out a wide range of scientific fields. Among other things, the students can choose between experimental work at the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, discussions with doctors from the local hospitals, contemporary historical project work or company presentations. The goals of this project week are to introduce the students to research in the region and to convey the necessity of scientific work for everyday life. The young people should also be shown professional perspectives in the area.

public relation

The school cooperates with the local economy, including the Siemens turbine factory, Waggonbau Görlitz as well as the Stadtwerke Görlitz and the University of Zittau / Görlitz .

School newspaper vole

In February 1991 the first school newspaper Wühlmaus appeared . The school newspaper was designed by students and the printing was financed through advertising and a contribution towards expenses. It appeared at irregular intervals until May 2005. The 46th edition of the vole was the last edition for the time being in May 2005. Since December 2009 the vole has been published every two months.

Support association

The school's friends' association was founded in 1991 by parents, former students and teachers. The goals of the association are the material support of the extracurricular life at the school, the teaching with additional material and the maintenance of tradition starting with the Luisenschule through the EOS up to the current school. Thus, the association of student cafes, for example, carriers of course . Every year the association awards the high school graduation award of the Joliot-Curie Gymnasium Görlitz to the best graduates. The chairman of the association is the former teacher and headmaster Karl-Heinz Winkler. His deputy is the former teacher Dr. Brigitte Pohl.

Partner schools

The school maintains several school partnerships, including a school in Mirsk, Poland, and the Lyceum in the neighboring Polish town of Zgorzelec . In 2002 the school took over the partnership with Theodorianum Paderborn from the Königshufen high school. As part of the school partnership, there is also regular student exchange between the schools in Paderborn , Görlitz and Zgorzelec. The exchange has existed since 1989.
