Jon Birgisson
Jon Birgisson († February 24, 1157 ) was the first Archbishop of Norway after Cardinal Breakspeare (later Pope Hadrian IV ) established the Archdiocese of Nidaros as a papal legate in 1152/1153 .
Little is known about him. He came from a noble family in Trøndelag. But he managed to get the provisions that the papal legate enacted when the archbishopric was established on Frostathing and in Bjarkøy law. This particularly concerned the law of pious foundations.
Jon Birgisson had previously been Bishop of Stavanger. Very likely, like Cardinal Breakspeare, he was a member of the Gregorian reform movement .
