Live and act

Gordon, whose mother was a singer and was first married to saxophonist Bob Gordon , attended the High School of Performing Arts until 1984 and then studied at the Manhattan School of Music until 1988 . He also took private lessons from Phil Woods . While studying, he played with Barney Kessel , Roy Eldridge , Charles McPherson , Al Gray , Doc Cheatham , Phil Woods and Mike Stern . From 1988 he worked with Red Rodney (1988), Loren Schoenberg , Bill Mays (1990) and Ron McClure , in order to then found his own band, with which he has released several albums since 1992, which have received particular critical acclaim. In 1996 he won the Thelonious Monk competition as an instrumentalist . His album Within Worlds was named one of the best productions of 2008 by Down Beat . As a composer he experiments with unusual forms and advanced harmony sequences, but tries (in his own words) not to lose the sense of the melody.

He was also a member of the all-star ensemble Jazz Nativity (which also included Dave Brubeck , Ron Carter and Tito Puente ). He has also been invited to numerous North American and European jazz festivals and was with Maria Schneider , The Vanguard Orchestra , Chico Hamilton , Jimmy Cobb , Ben Riley , Harry Connick , Bob Mintzer , Bill Mobley , Magni Wentzel , Kevin Mahogany and the NY Pops Orchestra to hear .
