Jordan Letschkow ( Bulgarian Йордан Лечков ; born July 9, 1967 in Straldja , Yambol district ) is a former Bulgarian football player , politician of the GERB party and former mayor of the city of Sliven .
Life
Letschkow began playing football when he was ten. His first club was the FK Sliven . At the age of 18 he turned professional and won the Bulgarian Cup in 1990 with FK Sliven. In 1991 the midfielder moved to CSKA Sofia . In 1992 Letschkow won the Bulgarian Cup with CSKA and then moved to Hamburger SV . At the 1994 World Cup , Letschkow reached 4th place as a national player with Bulgaria ; he scored the decisive header goal in the quarterfinals against Germany . After the 1994 World Cup, he was rarely used at HSV and moved to Olympique Marseille in 1996 , where he stayed until 1997. He then played for Beşiktaş Istanbul for another year . He then ended his sporting career. He played a total of 45 international matches.
Letschkow is married and has two sons. In 2003 he became mayor of Sliven , in 2008 he was confirmed in office and in 2011 he was voted out of office. In April 2010, an investigation into allegations of abuse of office was opened. In January 2013, he was sentenced to two years in prison. In November 2013, however, the judgment was overturned. Today Letschkow is Vice President of the Bulgarian Football Association FSO.
Awards
- In 1990 he was awarded the title of Master of Sports .
- In 1994 he received the Stara Planina Medal from Bulgaria's President Jelio Jelev.
- In 1994 he became an honorary citizen of Sliven.
