José Pedraza (athlete)

José Pedraza ( José Pedraza Zúñiga ; born September 19, 1937 in La Mojonera in Michoacán , † May 25, 1998 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican walker and silver medalist at the 1968 Olympic Games. He was trained by Jerzy Hausleber .

In 1967 he won silver at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in the 20 km walk behind the American Ron Laird . A year later at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , he entered the stadium in third place to the cheers of the domestic crowd, overtook Nikolai Smaga and narrowly missed the gold medal that went to Volodymyr Holubnytschyj . Pedraza was the first Mexican to win an athletics medal at the Olympic Games. In the 50 km walk he finished eighth in a personal best three days later.

José Pedraza is 1.74 m tall and weighed 66 kg during his playing days. He was a member of the Mexican Army , during his sporting career in the rank of Sargento ( NCO ) and later rose to Capitán ( captain ).
