Josef Hiltl (born August 30, 1889 in Schwandorf ; † April 20, 1979 in Mallersdorf ) was auxiliary bishop in Regensburg from 1951 to 1968 .

Life

Josef Friedrich Hiltl was born on August 30, 1889 in Schwandorf as the son of the train driver August Hiltl and his wife Berta nee. Ziegler, daughter of a tavern owner, was born. After graduating from high school in 1909, he studied theology at the Lyceum in Regensburg, where he became an active member of the Catholic student association Agilolfia in the KV . Shortly before the First World War , on June 29, 1914, he received the ordination of the then Regensburg Bishop Anton von Henle in the High Cathedral in Regensburg . As chaplain of Windischeschenbach , he began his pastoral work. After a short temporary job in Leonberg in the Tirschenreuth Dean's Office , he became a chaplain in Waldsassen in October 1916 . Here, too, he had to officiate as an auxiliary priest in Pappenberg from September 1921 to March 1922 . From 1922 to 1929 he was cathedral parish chaplain and religion teacher in Regensburg. In November 1929 he took up his position as pastor in Marktredwitz .

On August 1, 1935, called in Bishop Michael Buchberger as Regens in the seminary . As more and more theologians were drafted into the Reich Labor Service and the Wehrmacht , the seminar emptied. Eventually it became a military hospital, making Regens Hiltl a chaplain for the sick. In addition, he regularly held church services for inmates in the Regensburg prison.
