Josef Knar

Josef Knar (also Joseph ; born January 1, 1800 in Hartberg ; † June 1, 1864 in Graz ) was an Austrian mathematician , member of parliament and university professor .

Life

Knar came from a poor family. The obviously talented boy got a free place at the Konvikt in Graz. He first attended the local grammar school there and then the University of Graz . At the age of 19 he was both a Dr. iur. utr. as well as Dr. phil. PhD . He then became a supplent at the university.

In 1821 Knar became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Graz, which he held until his death. At times he was also given the professorship for technology. During his time he was dean of the Philosophical Faculty three times , most recently in the years 1857 to 1859. He was also rector of the university in the years 1834/1835, 1849/1850 and 1855/56 .

Knar was delegated from his hometown Hartberg to the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848 . He then took care of the reorganization of the Austrian insurance and banking system. The institutions that he restructured or influenced included the General Pension Fund in Vienna , the Wiener Sparkasse and the Steirische Sparkasse . As director and honorary director, he tried to get the Austrian fire insurance company based in Graz .
