Josef Pfluger (born February 7, 1857 in Raab, Upper Austria ; † January 10, 1929 in Vienna ) was titular bishop of Arpasa , since 1927 titular archbishop of Macra ; Vicar General and Auxiliary Bishop in Vienna (1911–1929).

Life

Josef Pfluger was born the son of a master carpenter in Raab (Upper Austria) . He entered the German priestly college Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome and studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University . On July 24, 1881, he was ordained a priest and in 1889 was ceremonial of Cardinal Ganglbauer in Vienna. In 1890, Pfluger received his doctorate in theology there and was promoted to the position of Ordinary Chancellor that same year. In 1900 he became canon of St. Stephen in Vienna ; 1911 appointed him Archbishop Franz Xaver Nagl to his vicar general , he followed so Godfried Marschall in office.

On November 30, 1911, Josef Pfluger was appointed titular bishop of Arpasa and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vienna , and on December 17, 1911 he was consecrated as a bishop by Cardinal Archbishop Nagl.

In 1913, after Cardinal Nagl's death, Pfluger headed the Archdiocese of Vienna as vicar of the capitol . The new Archbishop Friedrich Gustav Piffl confirmed him in his previous offices. On January 29, 1927, Josef Pfluger received the appointment as titular Archbishop of Macra as a personal honor . On May 26, 1927, Pfluger acted as co-consecrator of diocesan bishop Michael Memelauer in St. Pölten . From 1921 to 1929 the prelate also served as Chancellor of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna .

Auxiliary Bishop Pfluger died on January 10, 1929 and was buried in the chapter grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery.

In the "History of the Archdiocese of Vienna" the church historian Franz Loidl characterizes him with the words:

For years he was considered a reliable advisor for bishops and priests in all difficult legal questions. Pfluger never worked directly in pastoral care, he was not a great speaker and only appeared rarely in public. But as a competent and correct civil servant he fulfilled his duty in an exemplary manner and devoted his energies entirely to the many concerns of the diocesan administration "
