Josef Stummvoll
Josef Stummvoll (born August 19, 1902 in Baden near Vienna ; † March 22, 1982 ibid) was an Austrian librarian and from 1949 to 1967 director general of the Austrian National Library .
Life
Stummvoll initially studied chemistry, but felt drawn to the profession of librarian and joined the Deutsche Bücherei Leipzig in 1925 . Further career stations were stays in Turkey from 1933 to 1937 and the Reichspatentamt in Berlin from 1939 to 1942. In May 1946, Stummvoll, returning from captivity, joined the Austrian National Library; before the end of the year he was appointed deputy to the then general director Josef Bick and was general director of the library from 1949 to 1967. The legendary authoritarian head of the library tried to modernize the operation of the library. The facsimile of valuable manuscripts was of particular concern to him.
