In 2003, Croitoru published the widely acclaimed study The Martyrs as a Weapon. The historical roots of the suicide bombing . It shows how the weapon of the suicide bombing was invented by left-wing Palestinian fighting organizations in the early 1970s. The inspiration came not only from the Japanese kamikaze missions in World War II and their media staging, but also from the cooperation of Palestinian groups with terrorists from the Japanese Red Army . In the 1980s, the suicide bombing attack by Islamist terrorists in Lebanon was discovered as a weapon, and when it was used against the Israeli occupation forces, the Islamists competed with secular Lebanese militias. The further evolution of the suicide bombing in different countries in which suicide bombers were used is also traced.

In the spring of 2007, Croitoru published the book Hamas. The Islamic struggle for Palestine , which sheds light on both the genesis of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and its relentless political competition with its secular rival Fatah . The long conflict between these two Palestinian organizations eventually culminated, as in the updated Hamas paperback edition published in 2010 . On the way to the Palestinian state of God is set out in the violent takeover of power by Hamas in the Gaza Strip in June 2007.

The Germans and the Orient appeared in autumn 2018 . Fascination, contempt and the contradictions of the Enlightenment . It is the first comprehensive study of the image of Islam and the Arabs of the German Enlightenment in the second half of the 18th century. For the first time, the press, journalism, literature and theater are examined against the political background of the time. It shows how much Islam preoccupied and divided the Germans at the time, and how ambivalent their relationship to the Islamic Orient was.

Croitoru, stated Lothar Müller in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, “bursts beloved illusions about the Enlightenment of the 18th century” and uses his book “as a warning sign” against those who “defend the proposition that Islam belongs to” in the current Islamic debate Germany ”, see themselves“ as heirs to the Enlightenment of the 18th century ”and invoke“ their tolerance laws and their criticism of prejudice ”. Croitorus Buch, according to Wolfgang Schneider in Deutschlandfunk Kultur , one reads “inevitably in view of today's debates and irritations. And is amazed at how deep their roots are. This work expands our picture of the Enlightenment in an unexpected way ”.
