Joseph Peter Audebert (pronounced "ohd'bähr") (born March 3, 1848 in Dillingen , Saarland ; † February 14, 1933 in Groß-Rohrheim ) was a German naturalist and ethnologist.

Live and act

Audebert was born as the first of eight children to the main proxy at Dillinger Hütte, Nikolaus Joseph Audebert and Julia Brass, who cared for the working class families at the hut. After attending primary school and high school in Dillingen, he was accepted as a one-year volunteer in a Siegburg Uhlan Regiment (presumably Rhenish Regiment No. 7 ). During his military service he took part in the Franco-German War . After the end of the war he became estate manager at the Orb'schen vineyard in Westhofen . On behalf of the Leiden professor Hermann Schlegel , Audebert took part in a Madagascar expedition after six months of training. After a 90-day trip, he began the five-year undertaking in the fall of 1875. On his own initiative he stayed for another two years. During his stay, he explored the then little explored east coast and the Hova . The animal species he discovered include the thick-billed cuckoo ( Pachycoccyx audeberti ( Schlegel , 1879)) and the Malagasy white-bellied island rat ( Nesomys audeberti ( Jentink , 1879)).

After his return to Germany he published on the geography and population of Madagascar and went on lecture tours. From 1892 he was a game warden in Groß-Rohrheim and died there. He was briefly married and had no children.
