Joseph Egle , from 1864 von Egle (born November 23, 1818 in Dellmensingen , Württemberg ; † March 5, 1899 in Stuttgart ; spelling also Jose f von Egle) was a German architect and Württemberg construction clerk in Stuttgart.

Life

Von Egle studied at the Polytechnic School Stuttgart and the Polytechnic School Vienna , from 1839 to 1841 at the Berlin Building Academy . Here he was a student of Heinrich Strack and Karl Bötticher . From 1842 to 1847 he was a correspondent for the Allgemeine Bauzeitung in Northern Germany and England . In 1848 he went on a study trip to Italy .

In 1848 he was appointed director of the Stuttgart building trade school and was professor at the polytechnic school from 1850. From 1855 Egle was on the advisory board of the Münster Restoration in Ulm. After King Wilhelm I appointed him court architect in 1857 , he gave up the position at the polytechnic school, but remained director of the building trade school until his death. In 1863 he was appointed chief building officer and in 1884 court building director, at the same time he was on the board of the royal building and gardening directorate. He also acted as a judge on the jury for construction competitions.

Joseph von Egle Prize

The Joseph von Egle Prize is awarded twice a year by the state capital of Stuttgart, at the end of each university semester, to graduates of the Stuttgart University of Technology , the successor institution of the building trade school, for outstanding achievements.

Buildings and designs

  • 1860–1863: New building of the Stuttgart Polytechnic School in the Stadtgarten (today the Rectorate Building of the University of Stuttgart)
  • 1864–1867: interior reconstruction of the northeast wing of the New Palace in Stuttgart

Egle also led the restoration of the Frauenkirche in Esslingen am Neckar and the collegiate church in Urach . He was a restoration adviser for the neo-Gothic extension of the Ulm Minster.
